YACHT CHARTER FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking your luxury charter yacht

Chartering a luxury yacht raises questions. We’ve answered the most common ones here — from costs and crewing to destinations and contracts — so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.

Getting Started

A yacht charter is the rental of a privately crewed luxury yacht for a defined period — typically one week or more. You have exclusive use of the vessel, its crew, and all onboard amenities. Unlike a cruise, a charter is entirely private, with an itinerary built around your preferences.

A private yacht charter gives you full control over your schedule, destination, dining, and pace. There are no other guests, no fixed ports of call, and no shared facilities. The crew works exclusively for you.

The main categories are motor yachts, sailing yachts, and catamarans. Within these, you’ll find everything from 20-metre boutique vessels to megayachts exceeding 80 metres. Each type suits a different travel style — your broker will guide you based on your group size, destination, and priorities.

Submit an enquiry through Charter Yachts Finder with your preferred dates, destination, group size, and budget. A specialist charter broker will respond with a curated shortlist of available yachts that match your criteria.

Costs & What's Included

Charter fees vary widely depending on yacht size, season, and destination. Weekly rates typically start from around €15,000 for smaller vessels and extend well beyond €500,000 for the largest superyachts. This is the base fee only — additional costs apply.

The base rate covers use of the yacht and full crew. It does not include fuel, provisioning (food and beverages), harbour dues, marina fees, local taxes, VAT where applicable, and crew gratuity. These are covered through the APA.

APA stands for Advance Provisioning Allowance. It is an upfront payment — typically 25% to 40% of the charter fee — held by the captain to cover all running expenses during the charter: fuel, food, drinks, berthing fees, and any activities or transport arranged onboard. At the end of the charter, a full itemised account is provided and any unspent balance is returned to you.

Gratuity is not contractually required but is standard practice and genuinely appreciated. The industry norm is 10% to 20% of the charter fee, distributed at your discretion at the end of the charter. The captain typically handles distribution on your behalf.

Booking & Contracts

Once you have selected a yacht and dates are confirmed as available, you will receive a Charter Agreement — a formal contract outlining all terms. A deposit of 50% of the charter fee is required upon signing. The remaining balance, plus APA and any applicable taxes, is due approximately one month before the charter commences.

In many cases, a soft hold can be placed on a yacht while you finalise your decision — typically for 24 to 72 hours. This is not a formal commitment and requires no payment. Your broker handles this on your behalf.

Cancellation terms follow the MYBA standard charter contract. If you cancel after signing but before the final payment is due, the deposit is retained by the owner. If you cancel after full payment, the entire charter fee may be retained. Charter cancellation insurance is available and recommended.

Yes. Anti-money laundering regulations require identity verification prior to executing a charter contract. Individual charterers will typically need a certified passport copy and proof of address. Corporate charterers require additional corporate documentation. This is standard across all reputable charter operators.

Destinations & Itineraries

Charters are available in all major yachting destinations worldwide — the Mediterranean (French Riviera, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro), the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, Scandinavia, and beyond. Seasonal availability varies by destination.

Yes. Your itinerary is built around your preferences, in collaboration with your broker and the yacht’s captain. Factors including the yacht’s speed, local weather, marina availability, and visa requirements for your party will all shape the final route. Your captain will advise on the most practical and rewarding options.

The Mediterranean high season runs from June through September, with peak demand in July and August. The shoulder months — May, June, and September — offer excellent conditions with greater availability and more flexibility on pricing. The Western Mediterranean and the Amalfi Coast tend to be most sought-after in July and August.

Onboard Experience

Most privately registered charter yachts are licensed for a maximum of 12 overnight guests, as defined by international maritime law. Day guests may be permitted in addition to overnight guests, depending on the yacht’s commercial registration. For groups larger than 12, your broker can source commercially registered vessels with extended capacity.

The crew manages all aspects of the vessel and your onboard experience — navigation, engine operation, provisioning, meals, service, watersports instruction, and any shore-based logistics. On larger yachts you may have a chef, stewardess team, and dedicated watersports crew.

Most charter yachts carry a selection of watersports equipment — jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling gear, and inflatable water toys. Some vessels carry SCUBA diving equipment; use of this requires a valid PADI or equivalent certification. Availability varies by yacht.

This is entirely subject to the yacht owner’s policy. Some owners permit pets; others do not. Your broker will confirm this during the selection process.

Insurance

Yes. All charter yachts are insured by the owner for marine risks. However, this insurance covers the vessel — not the charterer’s liability for damage caused to the yacht or third parties, and not trip cancellation or personal medical emergencies.

Charterer’s liability insurance and trip cancellation insurance are strongly recommended. Charterer’s liability covers you for any damage caused to the yacht, its tenders, or third parties during the charter. Trip cancellation insurance protects your deposit and charter fee in the event you need to cancel. Your broker can refer you to specialist marine insurance providers.
